What Clogs a Well

Iron Bacteria
A naturally occurring organism that feeds on the iron already present in Trinity Aquifer water, leaving behind a reddish-brown slime and often a musty or oily odor. It can coat casing, screens, and pump components and is a biological problem, not just mineral staining.
Biofilm

Sediment

The Process
Shock Chlorination
Shock chlorination introduces a strong chlorine solution into the well casing and lets it work through the system, killing iron bacteria and other bacterial growth throughout the well, plumbing, and fixtures it reaches. After the treatment period, the system is flushed until the water runs clear and the chlorine is cleared out. It's the standard, well-established fix for bacterial contamination and the slime, odor, and staining that come with it — and it's frequently paired with a physical cleaning of the casing and screen when sediment or heavy buildup is also present.
